A new wash bay construction with an integrated trade waste system was needed to meet environmental and regulatory requirements for a major industrial facility. Citi Industries commissioned this comprehensive wash bay solution to manage wastewater efficiently, prevent any contamination, and improve the functionality of the site.
Problems Faced by the Client
The client was dealing with several challenges regarding their existing facility, including:
- Non-compliance with environmental regulations – Their old system did not meet trade waste disposal requirements.
- Inefficient water management – There was no effective separation of oil and water, leading to hazardous waste buildup.
- Deteriorated flooring – The existing wash bay area suffered from wear and tear, making it unsafe for daily operations.
- Lack of containment – Runoff water from the wash bay spread to other areas, increasing maintenance costs and environmental risks.
- Need for an automated system – A more modern control system was required for easier management and operation.
Understanding these challenges, Citi Industries proposed a custom wash bay construction and trade waste system tailored to meet the client’s specific needs.
Solutions Provided by Citi Industries
To address these issues, Citi Industries executed a detailed wash bay upgrade, incorporating high-quality materials and an efficient trade waste system.
Site Works and Preparation
Citi Industries started by preparing the site for the new installation:
- Concrete scanning and cutting to identify structural reinforcements.
- Removal of existing concrete (5m deep x 5m wide) and disposal at a designated refuse centre.
- Earthworks preparation for the installation of essential tanks and pits.
- Trade waste pipework configuration and connection of tanks and pits.
- Sewer connection to an approved location for proper waste management.
- Ground compaction and preparation to ensure a stable base for concrete works.
Installation of the Trade Waste System
The new trade waste system included the following:
- 3000-litre fibreglass holding tank (Class D sealed lid) for long-term waste management.
- 600mm inlet sump with a silt trap for the wash area, ensuring efficient waste collection.
- Two control panels for easy monitoring and operation.
- 1500-litre oil separator and ASM diaphragm suction pump, equipped with a control float switch to manage liquid waste separation.
Concrete Works and Wash Bay Construction
The wash bay was designed with durability and functionality in mind:
- Heavy-duty concrete flooring with reinforced rebar for long-lasting structural integrity.
- Smooth-finished surface to withstand high-pressure washing and heavy machinery.
- Bund walls to contain wastewater and prevent spills.
- Drainage system with Class D grating to efficiently direct water into the holding tank.
- Non-slip surface treatment to enhance worker safety.
Equipment Zone Integration
To keep the oil-water separator and control panel area clean and easily accessible, a dedicated 3m x 1m equipment zone was built behind the wash zone. This allowed for:
- Improved maintenance access
- Separation from the greasy wash area
- A small bund to direct drainage back into the main holding tank
Results of the Project
After carrying out the upgrade of the wash bay and setting up a trade waste system within the wash bay, the client has several changes going to include:
- Compliance – The new system ensures that wastewater management fullfils the legal requirement.
- Enhanced safety and long-lasting- The bunded wash area and high-strength concrete flooring reduced the risk of water and oil spills.
- Effective waste-water management- separating the oil from the waste water and holding tank reduced environmental costs;
- Easy operation- Automated control panels allow for easy management and monitoring.
- Lowering maintenance costs: The minimised cleanup and quick operation-time gap cause less expense now.
