Citi Industries recently completed a highly detailed above-ground grease trap installation for a commercial facility in Wynnum, QLD. Known for its more than two decades of specialised experience in waste management project construction, Citi Industries once again overcame engineering hurdles to deliver a reliable waste management system to another satisfied client. They installed a new system designed to meet current and future operational demands. This complex project offers reliable service to the facility. It also integrates a new grease trap, a dual-pump station, a venting system, and enhanced DDS management strategies to ensure long-term reliability. As strict council requirements and trade waste standards are in place across Queensland, the team provided an engineered solution that offers superior performance side-by-side with future compatibility with tenancy needs.
The Project’s Background
In the area where the Wynnum facility operates, consistent washdown activities and trade-waste output make compliance with local water authority requirements essential. Devoid of an upgraded wastewater system, the site faces an increased risk of sewer blockages, environmental hazards, and would most likely face potential penalties for non-compliance.
Throughout Australia, trade waste systems are closely regulated. Goulburn Valley Water and the Federation Council publish guidelines that ensure that grease, oils, and solids are removed before entering public sewer networks.
As such, a comprehensive above-ground grease trap installation that would seamlessly fit within the existing hydraulics room, remain accessible for servicing, and be robust enough to support heavy usage. In addition, it had to be equipped with forward-thinking DDS management features to support long-term performance and future tenancy expansion.
The Challenge
Hampered with these strict requirements, the project also encountered several technical and regulatory challenges. The team managed to shape innovative engineering strategies to surpass these issues, which included:
- Absence of a compliant grease trap system. The previous setup was insufficient for the volume and type of trade waste produced.
- Not enough space. The installation required precise placement and pipework configuration in the hydraulics room.
- Venting restrictions. New vent lines could not penetrate the roof and instead had to be routed into the tenancy ceiling above B1.
- Future tenant requirements. A separate waste connection point had to be installed for later use.
- Strict BCC supervision. Each stage of installation required documentation, testing, and inspection to secure approval.
Navigating these constraints required a high-level understanding of trade waste compliance and advanced DDS management to ensure the system would perform reliably under demanding commercial conditions. With more than two decades of problem-solving experience under their belt, the Citi Industries team wasted no time in developing smart solutions.
Our Solution
The Citi Industries meticulously designed a complete wastewater infrastructure upgrade, integrating modern hardware, efficient hydraulic layouts, and compliant venting systems.
Installation of a 2000-L Viking Above-Ground Grease Trap
A 2000-L Viking grease trap served as the core of the above-ground grease trap installation. It is durable, accessible, and is BCC-approved. Installed securely within the hydraulics room, the unit boasts strong screw-down lids and was ingeniously positioned to accommodate future service needs.
Installation of a 1200-L Ultraflow Dual Pump Station
For effective wastewater flow management, the team installed a 1200-L Ultraflow dual pump station equipped with high-functioning vortex pumps. This pump station enhances the system’s hydraulic efficiency and strengthens DDS management by minimising the risk of clogging or pump failure in the future.
New Control Panel Integration
To manage the newly installed system, a new control panel was supplied and prepared for electrical connection. The new control system was configured to support automation and monitoring of the new pump station.
Venting System Installation
New vents for both the pump station and the grease trap were also installed using a 100-mm PVC pipework. These were routed into the ceiling space and connected to tenancy-level vents identified during the assessment. This method ensured compliance without requiring new roof penetrations.
Trade Waste Provisional Point
Lastly, a new provisional trade waste connection point was installed for future tenants, reinforcing the overall DDS management strategy by allowing system expansion without structural modifications.
Installation Process
Citi Industries flawlessly executed the installation through a meticulous, council-compliant workflow, which comprised the following steps:
- Washdown Zone Works
Connected to the cold water supply and installed a backflow-protected washdown tap within 5 metres of the grease trap, then registered it with BCC. - Grease Trap Placement
They positioned and anchored the 2000-L Viking trap within the B1 hydraulics room. - Pump Station Installation
Then they installed the 1200-L Ultraflow dual-pump station and connected it to the grease trap outlet. - Venting Works
Once done, they routed new 100-mm PVC vent lines through the tenancy ceiling and connected them to approved venting points. - Pipework Configuration
After these, they connected the new grease trap outlet to the pump station and the pump station outlet to the local sewer in the B1 ceiling space. - Control Panel Setup
They then installed and configured the new control system for pump automation. - Testing and Commissioning
Afterwards, they conducted full system testing, including flow performance checks, pump sequencing, vent airflow assessment, and DDS management validation. - BCC Inspections
They then coordinated all mandatory inspections and secured formal approval for the full above-ground grease trap installation.
Project Outcomes
The Citi Industries team completed the Wynnum, QLD facility delivered on all of its promises, including:
- Verified BCC compliance at all stages;
- Improved wastewater handling capacity;
- Long-term reliability strengthened by modern DDS management principles;
- Reduced operational risk through above-ground accessibility;
- Lower future upgrade costs due to the newly installed provisional connection; and
- A future-ready system designed for business growth.
This facility now boasts an above-ground grease trap installation that provides a stable, efficient, and scalable wastewater solution that meets both current and future trade waste demands, complies with local regulates, and ensures a safe and hygenic environment for both the workers and the public.
