A Tasmanian business owner has been charged with spilling waste material into the Tasmanian Plenty River which has caused a mass fish kill.
The business operates a composting and waste storage facility and allegedly is responsible for pollutants entering the nearby waterway which has killed fish in the river and nearby properties which draw water from it.
Deaths of 100,000 brown trout fry, 12,000 rainbow trout fry, 43 brook trout broodstock and 23 display fish at the Salmon Ponds trout hatchery have been reported.
Facing 11 breaches of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act, the business owner is charged with intentionally and recklessly storing controlled waste in a manner it will likely escape into the environment.
